Q1 What is a Canada study permit?

A Canada study permit or a Canada study visa is a legal document that allows international students to study in Canada.

Q2 Who needs it?

All foreign nationals who want to study in Canada must get a Canada study permit.

Q3 How to apply?

To apply for a Canada study permit you must:

  • Have an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) i.e. Canadian educational institution
  • Meet all the terms of the study permit
  • Submit a complete application with all supporting documents

Q4 Who does not need a study permit? Are their activities which do not require a study permit?

An applicant does not need a study permit if:

  • Is a family member(s) or private staff of a foreign delegate accredited by Global Affairs Canada, or
  • Is the member of armed forces of a country or territories and comes under the Visiting Forces Act

The following activities are also exempt from a study permit requirement:

  • Attending preschool
  • Finishing a distance learning program
  • Doing audit courses where no academic credits are to be received
  • Secondary activity courses for tourists included in tour packages
  • A short term non-academic, professional or vocational course
  • Study program which is of 6 months or less

Q5 Are study permit terms different for Quebec than the rest of Canada?

No, study permit terms are the same throughout Canada. But to study in Quebec applicants must first get a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) issued by the Ministère de l’Immigration, Diversité et Inclusion (MIDI). After that, an applicant can apply to IRCC for a study permit.

Q6 What are the terms for applying for a Canada study permit?

To apply, applicants must:

  • Meet the terms of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, and agree to leave Canada when the study permit expires
  • Give proof of funds
  • Must not have a criminal record
  • Pose no risk to Canada
  • Must be in good health

Q 7 Does a Canada study permit come with any conditions?

If you have a study permit then you must:

  • Stay enrolled in your Canadian educational institute
  • Work towards completing your study program.

 

In addition, an officer might put, change or cancel certain conditions on your study permit such as:

  • Type of study program you can choose
  • Choice of Canadian educational institutional
  • Location of studies
  • Period of studies
  • Time and place of giving the medical exam
  • Time and place of giving documents that prove you meet all study permit terms
  • Conditions for working in Canada as mentioned in your work permit
  • Terms for getting and working in a job
  • Time of your stay in Canada

Q8 Which one to have, a Temporary Residence Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)?

Foreign nationals need an eTA to travel in Canada but some foreign nationals may need a TRV for the same reason. An eTA is a paperless document that is electronically linked to the passport. It confirms that the applicant meets all terms and conditions and can enter the country as a temporary resident. Whereas a TRV is a document that is placed in your passport and confirms the same. Further, IRCC may issue one of the two, as per the need of the application submitted.

Q 9 Can one application include all accompanying family members or a separate application for each member must be made?

As per IRCC, all family members of the applicant must complete their forms. However, family members can apply together online or at a visa centre. Also, they can use one payment receipt for the total payable amount.

Q10 Who is a custodian and why is one needed?

A custodian is an individual in Canada who will be taking care of an applicant who is under 17 years of age. Because IRCC requires a minor applicant coming to Canada without its parents or legal guardians to be looked after during its stay in the country. Besides, the parents or legal guardians in their country or territory of origin must first complete and sign a custodian declaration, with the custodian in Canada.

Note – It is not compulsory to have a custodian when a minor applicant is travelling with one parent. But the non-travelling parent must submit consent documents for the same.

Q 11 Can an international student work without a work permit in Canada?

Yes, an international student can work without a work permit. Because IRCC allows international students to work in work programs for the students. Besides, an international student can work:

On-campus

If you meet the terms of your study permit and are enrolled in your Canadian educational institute then you can work on your campus without a work permit. But your employer can be either the school or a private contractor opening on campus.

Off-campus

You can work for a maximum of 20 hours a week during the regular academic session and full-time during any breaks, only if:

  • Hold a valid study permit
  • Remain enrolled at a Canadian educational institute
  • Also, study program must be post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program or a secondary level vocational training program offered in Quebec
  • Further, the study program must be for a minimum of 6 months or more and must get you a degree, diploma or certificate
  • Continue to meet all terms of your study permit and your off-campus work conditions such as job hours limit etc.

As a part of a co-op or internship program

You can work in a co-op or internship program only if it is a part of your study program at the Canadian educational institution. Also, to start your co-op work or internship you must get a co-op work permit.

Q 12 Is it necessary to submit medical exam results?

The need for a medical exam depends on two conditions:

  • Plan to study in or visit Canada for less than 6 months – No need to give a medical certificate/exam.
  • Plan to study in or visit Canada for more than 6 months – Must submit a medical exam/certificate.

Q 13 What is the minimum amount of funds an applicant must have to apply for a Canada study permit?

As per IRCC, the following is the minimum amount of funds an applicant must have for himself and any accompanying family member.
