Canada will be deciding on 285,000 applications and will be approving 300000 citizenship applications. As a result, IRCC is to process 300000 citizenship applications till March 2023.
Also, in comparison to the 2021-2022 fiscal year, we see a positive rise in the selection of applicants. For that period, IRCC approved 217,000 citizenship applications. However, up till now in the 2022-2023 fiscal year, Canada has already accepted 116,000 citizenship applications. Thus, we can see that Canada is well on track to achieve its target for Canadian citizenship.
The same can be confirmed from the statistics of 2021-2022 when in the same period Canada had only accepted 35,000 citizenship applications.

During the 2020 pandemic, Canada was able to process paper-based applications. Also, all in-person interviews and oath ceremonies could not take place for the same reason. As a result, IRCC took a step to digitalise the process for better access and the processing of Canadian citizenship applications. This applied to new applicants from November 2022. But the paper-based application backlog remains.
So, the IRCC has been asked to first prioritise the paper-based application backlog. For the 2021-2022 fiscal year due to the digitalisation effort, Canada can easily process online applications.
As per June 2022 records, IRCC has an application backlog of 413,000. But IRCC says that this is due to the rise in online application submissions. Because of this, it has hired 1000 staff members to curb this need. As a result, it will be able to process up to 80% of the applications within the applicable standard processing time.
