British Columbia is enacting its International Credentials Recognition Act to help international applicants. The new act will focus on streamlining the process and working on how international credentials are recognised in BC. Such as removing additional fees, language requirements and work experience terms for certain applicants. Besides, BC International Credentials Recognition Act to affect 29 licensed occupations.
Yes, the new act will affect 29 licensed occupations. For the new amendments, the province consulted 18 regulatory bodies while making the same. The BC Legislative Assembly passed these amendments on November 2023.
Following is the list of 29 licensed occupations that will be affected by the BC International Credential Act:
In addition, BC plans to remove the work experience requirement for licensed occupations. For the same, the province is working with regulatory authorities to understand the work experience requirements that may not be applicable as per the new rule.
However, BC may allow a regulator to fulfil work experience needs with apt reasons. In addition, there is still 1 year transition period for work experience requirement.
All licensed occupations require applicants to get a license to work in Canada. Thus, when getting a license applicants give language test results. As a result, as per the new act, BC intends to remove this requirement.
If you have given language tests earlier for your certification, you need not give language test results again. However, this may apply, if it has been more than 5 years since the applicant submitted its application to a regulatory authority or the new act does not process.
Another benefit of the new act is that applicants will no longer pay higher fees to a regulatory authority. As a result, the domestic fees and international applicant fees will be the same.
But why does Canada need the new act? This is because applicants have an issue with long licensing processes, higher costs, and application delays.
As a result, the new act will help newcomers/applicants easily get credentials assessment. So, make use of the new regulations.
