Canadian officials are allowing entry of temporary foreign workers. And are giving importance to jobs that help in food security. The country is helping its employers by processing all temporary foreign worker program streams applications. Even though Canada has shut its borders, it realises the need for skilled foreign workers. Because there are industries who can not survive without their help. As a result, the country continues to welcome foreign workers into the country.
Canada is making it important for employers from the food industry to get an LMIA. This includes primary agriculture, agri-food, food processing and trucking industry. Here are some of the steps that the govt is taking to allow entry of immigrants for working in Canada.
The govt is giving new LMIA extensions for a period of nine months. Also, this period is an increase in the previous limit of 6 months.
Applicants from both the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) and agricultural stream positions, now have a validity period until December 15, 2020, or nine months, whichever is longer. In addition, the program is giving an extra 3 months for those who already have an approved LMIA. Thus, it makes the validity period for them, a total of 9 months.
Coronavirus or COVID-19 is a global pandemic. And Canada is taking all measures to stop it. As a result, it is taking steps to help both Canadian employers and foreign immigrants. It is relaxing immigration rules and regulations and is increasing time for deadlines wherever necessary. Thus it is giving employers flexibility in reporting layoffs, terms of employment such as wages and work hours etc.
We can expect more details regarding the same in the near future.
At the moment no new compliance reviews are taking place. No new inspections, onsite or paper-based are being conducted. Also, no onsite contact with employers and temporary foreign workers is being made.
In addition, the department is working only on important functions. This is also as per the availability of officers. Furthermore, inspections that are currently happening will continue. That too only if they are paper-based and important.
The Canada govt is suggesting that applicants send online applications for an LMIA. As it is expecting service delays at some offices and also the closure of some processing offices. Therefore, they will temporarily accept LMIA through email.
The process for email LMIA will be updated. The govt will update its website. And will share news regarding the same.
The workload strategy for immigration services is still being finalized. But the govt is taking steps to offer services on schedule.
For the Global Talent Stream, the aim of the 10-day processing standard remains unchanged.
In order to reduce processing delays, govt will also increase the processing time for applications. Such as for changing a foreign worker named on the LMIA. And the processing time for it is changing from 5 days to 1 day. This is only applicable if the employer wants to hire a new worker from the one that is originally there on the LMIA request.
