The Alberta Tourism and Hospitality Stream is a dedicated immigration pathway under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). This stream is designed for temporary foreign workers who are currently employed full-time in Alberta’s tourism and hospitality sector and have a full-time job offer from a qualifying Alberta employer in an eligible occupation. Who Can Apply for the Alberta Tourism and Hospitality Stream?

  • This stream is open to temporary foreign workers who:
  • Are living and working full-time in Alberta.
  • Hold a full-time job offer from a qualifying Alberta employer in an eligible occupation.
  • Possess a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or are eligible under certain IRCC special measures (e.g., wildfire-affected workers).
  • Meet minimum requirements for occupation, language, education, job offer, and work experience.

What are the eligibility criteria to apply?

  1. Employer Requirements
  • The employer must operate in Alberta’s tourism and hospitality sector, with a primary business activity in an eligible industry, as defined by Alberta Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) industry codes.
  • The employer must have valid WCB coverage or, if exempt, provide a WCB clearance letter.
  • The employer must be a member of an approved sector association (see examples below) or be listed as an Experience Provider on the Travel Alberta website if not eligible for association membership.
  • Employers must comply with all Alberta and federal employment standards and must not charge employees fees for job offers or employment.

  1. Eligible Occupations (NOC 2021 Codes)
  • Applicants must be working in one of the following eligible occupations:
  • 54100 – Program leaders and instructors in recreation, sport, and fitness
  • 60030 – Restaurant and food service managers
  • 60031 – Accommodation service managers
  • 62020 – Food service supervisors
  • 62200 – Chefs
  • 63200 – Cooks
  • 64300 – Maîtres d’hôtel and hosts/hostesses
  • 64301 – Bartenders
  • 64314 – Hotel front desk clerks
  • 64320 – Tour and travel guides
  • 64322 – Outdoor sport and recreational guides
  • 65200 – Food and beverage servers
  • 65201 – Food counter attendants, kitchen helpers, and related support
  • 65210 – Support occupations in accommodation, travel, and facilities set-up services
  • 65310 – Light duty cleaners
  • 65311 – Specialized cleaners
  • 65312 – Janitors, caretakers, and heavy-duty cleaners
  • 65320 – Dry cleaning, laundry, and related occupations

  1. Work Permit Requirements
  • Applicants must hold a valid work permit based on a positive LMIA for the eligible occupation, or under IRCC temporary special measures (such as for wildfire-affected workers).
  • Maintained status, open work permits, or other permit types are not eligible.

  1. Work Experience
  • A minimum of 6 consecutive months (at least 780 hours) of full-time, paid work experience in Alberta in the same occupation and with the same employer as the job offer is required.
  • Work experience must be authorized by IRCC and completed with valid temporary resident status.

  1. Job Offer
  • The job offer must be full-time, continuous, and paid, with a minimum of 30 hours per week for at least 12 months.
  • The offer must be from the same employer where the applicant gained the required work experience.
  • Ineligible job types include part-time, casual, seasonal, home-based, or virtual positions, as well as independent contractors and agency workers.

  1. Language Proficiency
  • Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 4 in English or French in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing).
  • Accepted tests: CELPIP General, IELTS General Training, TEF Canada, TCF Canada. Test results must be less than two years old at the time of application.

  1. Education
  • Minimum requirement is completion of Canadian high school or equivalent.
  • If education was obtained outside Canada, an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for the highest level of education is required.

  1. Employer Legal Compliance
  • The employer must not be in violation of Alberta or federal laws related to employment, immigration, or recruitment.

  1. Supporting Documentation
  • Applicants must provide a job offer letter, language test results, ECA (if required), and proof of work experience and work permit status.
