On Aug 24 Honourable Marco E.L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship announced a new temporary policy change. This policy will benefit:
Foreign visitors:
Such people will now be able to apply for an employer-specific work permit. To get the same they no more have to leave Canada.
This update is to ease the problems of temporary residents in Canada. Because Canada had asked them to maintain legal status. But due to air-travel restrictions, many permanent residents could not leave the country whereas foreign workers had to change their status to ‘visitors’ since their work permit was expiring.
Employers:
Due to the pandemic, Canadian employers were not able to hire skilled workers to meet its labour market needs. This includes areas dealing with essential goods and services.
Besides, this policy benefits everyone who qualifies. Also including super visa holders, business visitors and people who have work permit exemption under the Global Skills Strategy.
To qualify, an applicant:
This policy will help people who meet the policy terms and had a work permit for 12 months. As they can start working for a new Canadian employer before approval on their work permit application comes. To apply, follow these steps.
Besides, this policy stands null and void for all people who enter Canada as visitors after Aug 24, 2020.
Earlier, anyone who was applying as a temporary resident had to get a work permit before they entered Canada. Whereas, if the applicant was already in the country as a visitor at the time of work permit approval, they had to leave Canada and return before the work permit was issued.
