Foreign skilled trades workers to get $5000 incentives in Alberta

Alberta is strongly working towards attracting and rewarding foreign skilled trades workers. The aim is to retain such talent in Alberta because Canada is facing a high labour shortage. As of May 2924, the job vacancies were reported at 596,895. Thus, to tackle this, Foreign skilled trades workers to get $5000 incentives in Alberta.

The key highlights of this initiative are:

• Firstly, the province launched the Alberta is Calling program in April 2024.
• Secondly, Alberta will offer $5000 one-time refundable credit incentives to 2,000 people.
• Also, the application intake period begins on May 01, 2025.
• Besides, this is applicable for skilled trades workers in Alberta who meet the following terms:
  • Be of the age of 18 or older.
  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Also, be in Alberta between May 01, 2024, to Dec 31, 2024.
  • Besides, be a tax resident of Alberta on Dec 31, 2024.
  • Moreover, are employed or self-employed in an eligible occupation.
    • Employed: Working in a full-time, and paid job of 30 hours a week or 130 hours a month. Also, show proof of employment.
    • Self-employed: Self-employment must be in an eligible occupation. And earning from this must be a minimum of $2000 one month before applying. 
  • Further, have been a resident of Alberta for a minimum of 1 year at the time of applying.

$5000 incentives in Alberta for skilled trades workers to meet the high labour shortage 

Alberta has a long history of facing a shortage of skilled workers. In fact, the province lists 9 high in-demand industry occupations:

1. Automotive service technicians, truck and bus mechanics and mechanical repairers (NOC: 72410)
2. Automotive and heavy truck and equipment parts installers and servicers (NOC: 74203)
3. Construction managers (NOC 70010)
4. Civil Engineers (NOC: 21300)
5. Electrical and electronics engineering technologists and technicians (NOC: 22310)
6. Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NOC: 21310)
7. Engineering Managers (NOC: 20010)
8. Electrical Mechanics (NOC: 72422)
9. Plumbers (NOC: 72300)

Besides, as per May 2024, Statistics Canada report, Alberta’s job vacancies stand at 76,500. So, you can understand why Alberta is offering $5000 to skilled trades workers to meet its high and urgent labour market shortage.
