Spouses of Low Skilled Immigrants can now apply for Open Work Permit in Atlantic Canada Province.

The Federal Department of Immigration has announced certain changes in the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP). As per the notification, now the spouses of non-high skilled workers, can apply for open work permit. The notification focuses on attracting more immigrants to Atlantic Canada province.

Furthermore, now, the open work permit will allow the spouses of the migrants to work. They can now search jobs  in areas such as food and beverage, servers or long-haul truck drivers. Previously, the spouses of only high-skilled positions, such as medicals doctors or architects etc were able to apply for a work permit.

“The Provincial government of Atlantic Canada wants to ensure that all newcomers are given such a quality life that the migrants make Atlantic Canada their home forever,” said Matt DeCourcey, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration.

The AIPP is an immigration program ensuring the long-term retention and integration of newcomers in Atlantic Canada. AIPP  will help in boosting the economic growth of 4 provinces namely NL, PEI, NS and NB.

In March 2019, a number of changes to the pilot were introduced based on feedback and lessons learned and based on the feedback from various stakeholders, the program is extended for another two years until end of 2021.

Role of Immigrants in the Canadian Economy

In a recent report by the Conference Board of Canada, immigrants will play a major role in the sustenance of Canada’s economic growth by meeting Canada’s labor market, in future.  The immigration process is likely to bring in 3.7 million workers in Canada. Therefore, resulting in the growth of over the next 20 years.

In order to maintain its high standard of living, Canada needs recruitment of new sources of talent. At present, Canada is highly dependent on foreign migrants. To point out , immigration of skilled labor is a must due to aging population and low fertility rate of Canada.

In a statistical figure by the Conference Board, between 2018 to 2040, Approximately 11.8 million people will leave Canadian schools. However the people expected to retire will be significantly higher. To conclude, still Canada would still have a labor shortage and immigration is the best possible way to close the gap.
