New Zealand Aid Student Visa

An individual must be funded by the New Zealand Government under certain schemes to be considered eligible for this visa. During their stay in New Zealand, they can enjoy high-quality teaching standards and gain internationally recognised qualifications.

Visa Eligibility:

  • The individual must be funded by the New Zealand government under certain schemes to be considered eligible for this visa.
  • They must meet the character requirements.

This visa allows an individual to:

  • Study full-time at the course stated on their visa – this includes schools, tertiary (study after secondary school) and English language study.
  • Work part-time up to 20 hours a week while studying and full-time in the holidays, depending on their New Zealand Aid Programme scheme.
  • The applicant cannot include their partner and dependent children in their application for a New Zealand Aid Student Visa, but they can apply for their own visas based on their relationship to them.
  • Depending on their scholarship programme, their partner may be eligible for a work visa for the length of their New Zealand Aid Programme scholarship.
  • Their dependent children will be eligible for student visas.

Visa conditions:

If the applicant is granted a visa, there are conditions that they must meet. These visa conditions are described below.

Entry permission – The individual must apply for entry permission when they arrive in New Zealand. They can do this by completing an arrival card, which they’ll be given on the way to New Zealand.

They individual can be refused entry permission if:

  • They do not meet the character requirements
  • Their circumstances have changed since they were granted a visa
  • They refuse to let their photo be taken or to provide their fingerprints or an iris scan when asked to do so.
  • They’re unable to provide evidence of any onward travel or funds required by the conditions of their visa.

Travel – they can travel in and out of New Zealand until their visa expires. If they want to do short-term study for less than 3 months, they’ll need a Visitor Visa. Depending on the length of their course, they may be able to stay in New Zealand for up to 4 years.

The individual’s partner may be eligible for a Work Visa for the length of their NZAP scholarship.

Onward travel – The individual must have the means to return home at the end of their stay.

They may be asked for evidence of their travel arrangements when they check in or arrive in New Zealand.  If they’re not required to provide evidence, it’ll be recorded in their visa label or visa letter.

Funding – The individual must be funded by a New Zealand Aid Programme.

If their New Zealand Aid Programme funding stops, they could be asked to leave New Zealand.

Work – They can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during the Christmas-New Year holiday period, if they’re studying under any of these schemes:

  • Commonwealth Scholarships
  • New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships
  • New Zealand Pacific Scholarships
  • New Zealand Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Scholars Award.

They can’t work if they’re studying under any of these schemes:

  • Short-Term Training Awards; New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships
  • English Language Training for Officials.

When they have a job in New Zealand, they have to pay tax on their earnings. they’ll need to have a New Zealand bank account and an IRD number to do this.

They aren’t allowed to be self-employed. They have to work as an employee with an employment agreement and not as an independent contractor.

They can’t provide commercial sexual services or operate a business that provides these services.

Attendance and progress – The individual must study full-time and attend their course at the approved education provider noted on their visa, unless they have a reasonable excuse for absences. They must make satisfactory progress on their course.

Visa Expiry – They must leave New Zealand before their visa expires. Visa expiry dates are printed on a visa label, or included in a visa letter.

Return to their home country – They must return to their home country and stay in their country for at least 2 years after they complete their scholarship, so they can apply their new skills and knowledge in government, civil society or private business organisations.
