What factors will determine if you will get single or multiple entry Canada Visitor Visa?

Canada comes with another IRCC update. The country will no longer issue 10-year visitor visas. So, in such a case, what factors will determine if you will get single or multiple entry Canada Visitor Visa?

This blogpost aims to delve into the mechanisms that shall play a key role in you either getting a single entry or multiple entry Canada visitor visa.

But who needs a visitor vis? A visitor visa is a temporary resident visa (TRV). And allows the holder to enter Canada temporarily. Here, one has to keep in mind that some countries require a TRV, whereas some do not. Also, there are some countries whose nationals require an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) to enter Canada.

So, as per your citizenship, you will have to apply for a visitor visa accordingly. Please note, that TRV refers to visa types that allow visa holders to temporarily stay in Canada. This umbrella term encompasses the study, work, tourist, and visitor visas in lieu of the purpose of the visit of the applicant.

However, US green card holders and citizens do not require a visitor visa to enter Canada.

What is the single and multiple entry Canada visitor visa?

the difference between a single entry and multiple entry visitor visa is simple. As the name suggests if you get a:

Multiple-entry visa: You can enter and exit Canada as many times as you want within 10 years or as per the expiry of your passport, biometrics, or travel document, whichever comes first.

Single-entry visa: Similarly, a single entry visa allows you to enter Canada once. If you leave the country and wish to re-enter then you must apply for a new visitor visa.

How will IRCC decide what type of Canada visitor visa will you get?

As per IRCC, the following are the factors as per which they will decide if you will get a single entry or a multiple entry Canada visitor visa such as:

  • Purpose of visit.
  • Proof of funds.
  • Medical treatment requirements and,
  • Other factors.

The immigration officers as per the four factors will take into consideration multiple aspects such as but not limited to the examples below:

Factor Questions Asked
Purpose of visit You will be visiting for one time for a conference, event, training, or travel purpose, OR will be entering Canada frequently (for example to visit family members or relatives)?
You are a short-term student or worker who does not need a study/work permit?
Do you need parental supervision, every time you enter Canada? (Example, a minor attending a summer program)
Are you visiting a family member to offer critical care or a member is dying?
Proof of funds Do you have a stable income from ongoing employment to fund your trips to Canada?
If you have a host’s invitation, will they cover your expenses? What relationship do you have with the host and how financially well-off is the host?
Is the host inviting other applicants and can they manage the financial strain of all such applicants?
If your employer is supporting your travel expenses for cases such as business meeting/training, have you submitted a supporting letter?
Medical reasons Are you travelling to Canada to seek medical treatment?
Will your health condition worsen over time in Canada?
Have you submitted a plan that ensures that you can address possible health risks? Such as having valid health insurance?
Other factors Do you have strong ties to your home country via employment or family responsibilities?
Did you follow all visa conditions when travelling earlier to Canada or any other country in the past?
Do you have a visa refusal for Canada or any other country in the past?

What other factors can IRCC consider while granting a Canada visitor visa?

Regarding multiple entry visitor visas, IRCC may give a lesser validity period than the earlier decisions. There are additional factors which IRCC may consider before taking a decision such as:

  • Purpose of visit: Here IRCC will see if the applicant is coming on a short business visit as a part of after-sales service.
  • Tie to home country: Will the status of the applicant’s tie to home country and to Canada change in the future?
  • Political and economic conditions: If they will impact the applicant’s ability to return to their home country.

What can I do if IRCC rejects my visitor visa application?

If IRCC rejects your Canada visitor visa application, then it may be because:

  • Firstly, you are unable to convince the immigration officer whether you have valid reasons to enter Canada. Often, this decision relates to the applicant’s intention of not leaving Canada once they enter.
  • Secondly, you are inadmissible due to past medical or criminal history.

Canada does not allow visa refusals to be challenged formally. Thus, you can reapply if you can satisfy the conditions of the visa refusal.

So, you can reapply in certain cases such as but not limited to:

  • Firstly, you have applied for criminal rehabilitation or are eligible for deemed rehabilitation.
  • Secondly, you are still inadmissible but are trying to apply for a temporary resident permit.
  • Also, you were earlier medically inadmissible. But your situation is no longer the same.

Thus, as per above examples, you can reapply for a Canada visitor visa.

How can I get a clear idea about why my Canada visitor visa application is rejected?

To get a clear idea regarding your visa refusal, you can request for GCMS notes. All IRCC officers enter their remarks/feedback regarding every application in the Global Case Management System (GCMS).

Here you can get to know:

  • The reason your visa application does not qualify for a visa approval.
  • The process of an immigration officer working on your visa application.
  • What are circumstances of the visa application and so on.
