The sponsor needs to have lived lawfully in Australia for the two years before the application is lodged.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An individual might be able to get a permanent Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 143) if they either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hold a temporary\u00a0<a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Have a child who is:\n<ol>\n<li>An Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident or an\u00a0<a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eligible New Zealand citizen<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Lawfully resident in Australia for about two years (a shorter period can be considered for Australian citizens if there are compelling and compassionate circumstances)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Meet the balance-of-family test<\/li>\n<li>Have an accepted assurance of support<\/li>\n<li>Meet<a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0health\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">character<\/a>\u00a0requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What does this visa allow for:<\/strong><br \/>\nThis permanent residence visa allows the individual and any of their family members who have also been granted this visa:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay in Australia indefinitely<\/li>\n<li>Work and study in Australia<\/li>\n<li>Enroll in\u00a0<a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medicare<\/a>,\u00a0Australia\u2019s scheme for health-related care and<br \/>\nexpenses<\/li>\n<li>Apply for Australian citizenship(if they are eligible)<\/li>\n<li>Sponsor\u00a0eligible relatives for permanent residence<\/li>\n<li>Travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted (after that time, they will need a resident return\u00a0visa or another visa to return to Australia).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Before Application:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An individual will have to pay more for Contributory Parent visas than for most other visas. This is because many families wanted a faster visa process and were prepared to pay a higher contribution towards their family members\u2019 health and welfare costs in Australia. Visa charges cannot be waived or reduced.<\/p>\n<p>An individual also has\u00a0the option of applying for a\u00a0<a href=\"#\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173)<\/a>, which provides a two-stage pathway, allowing the costs of Contributory Parent migration to be staggered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The visa application charges are listed in\u00a0<a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fees and charges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The visa application charge for this visa is paid in two installments.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pay the first installment when lodging the application<\/li>\n<li>Pay the second installment when the individual is asked to. They must pay it for the visa to be granted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>The sponsor:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The individual must be sponsored by an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or\u00a0<a href=\"#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eligible New Zealand citizen<\/a>. The sponsor\u00a0needs to\u00a0have been living lawfully in Australia for at least two years before they apply for this visa. For most applicants, their child or their\u00a0child\u2019s spouse or de facto\u00a0partner\u00a0will need to sponsor them.<\/p>\n<p>If their child is younger than 18 years of age they can be sponsored by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Their child\u2019s spouse, if the spouse has\u00a0turned 18 and is a\u00a0settled Australian\u00a0citizen, permanent\u00a0resident or eligible New Zealand citizen<\/li>\n<li>A relative or guardian of their child<\/li>\n<li>A relative or guardian of their child\u2019s spouse, if the spouse has not turned 18 and is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen<\/li>\n<li>A community organisation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sponsor obligations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a sponsor, an individual must give a written undertaking to provide support for their parent(s) for their first two years in Australia. This also applies to any family members who came with their parent to Australia.<\/p>\n<p>During this period, they must provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support<\/li>\n<li>Accommodation<\/li>\n<li>Financial Assistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Assurance of support:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If an individual has also provided an accepted assurance of support for their parent, they are responsible for repaying to the Australian Government any social security payments they might have received during the 10-year period after their arrival in Australia or after they have been granted the visa in Australia, whichever applies.
