A sponsor can support a refugee for up to 1 year. And you will help the refugee with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Start-up costs such as clothing, furniture needs etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Monthly costs such as transportation, food, housing needs etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Social and emotional support.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><br class=\"none\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Who can sponsor refugees?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To sponsor a refugee you must be a part of the following groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sponsorship Agreement Holders (SAH):<\/strong> Sponsors enter an agreement with the government of Canada to help in the resettlement of refugees in Canada.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Under this, there are constituent groups, who work with SAHs to sponsor a refugee under the SAH agreement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Groups of Five:<\/strong> A group of 5 or more Canadian citizens or permanent citizens can sponsor refugees to settle in their communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Community sponsors:<\/strong> These are organisations, corporations or associations that sponsor refugees to help them live a safe and better life in Canada.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><br class=\"none\" \/>Quebec Refugee Sponsorship<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Quebec has its own process to allow Canadian citizens or permanent residents in Quebec to sponsor a refugee. To know more <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>click here<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br class=\"none\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Who can be sponsored?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To sponsor a refugee it must meet the following terms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Are living outside Canada, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And qualify as per the definition of a refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Also, under this, 2 classes of refugees qualify such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Convention Refugee Abroad Class and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Country of Asylum Class.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>How to sponsor a refugee?<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One can sponsor a refugee in the following ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sponsor a refugee with special needs:\u00a0<\/strong>Canada allows to sponsor refugees with special needs under its <strong>Joint Assistance Sponsorship (JAS)<\/strong>. As per this, a group can sponsor refugees with special needs such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Severe trauma due to violence\/torture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Medical disabilities\/issues,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Systemic discrimination, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A large number of family members<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Under the JAS program, the government of Canada and a private sponsor support a refugee for a period of up to 24 months. Also, in some cases, the private sponsor can sponsor up to 36 months. However, they must meet the terms of the PSR program.
